Microsoft, Sony Give Up

Sep 26, 2008 at 9:49am by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

This found over at Gamasutra.

St. John claims that Sony has announced it will not make a new console for 10 years. He also says that when asking representatives at Sony and Microsoft who is the head of the next console development, they will not name a name.

The major reason neither Sony nor Microsoft will make another console, according to St. John, is because the business does not make financial sense. It’s not news to anyone in the game industry that current generation hardware is sold at a loss to the company.

And at Microsoft, that business model is unlikely to float any longer now that Bill Gates has retired and Steve Ballmer — whom St. John calls “a money guy” — is leading the company. Consoles just aren’t profitable, he says, and the motive to repeat those failures just isn’t there.

On the other hand, Townsend and Stevenson argue that the install base is already there. With millions of Xbox 360s and PlayStation 3s already hooked up in people’s homes, it already is an immovable element of the modern living room. Game consoles will drive the high-definition entertainment experience, says Stevenson.

Interview with the Armature Studios Founders

Sep 19, 2008 at 9:36pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

Gamasutra has an interesting interview with the Metroid Prime developers who founded Armature Studios. They discuss the unsustainable business models of many modern game development studios. They have a theory they are testing with the formation of Armature Studios that having the entire development process carried out in-house is not necessary to create top-class games and is too expensive. Read the interview over there if you’re interested.

The new Austin, Texas-based company is in many ways an experiment intended to demonstrate a different type of development: keeping a small in-house staff to conceive ideas and rapidly prototype gameplay concepts and technology, then working with external contractors and outsourcers for full production.

The company is currently hiring, but plans to cap out at around eleven employees — and deliver full-scale, triple-A games with its distributed development model.

Nintendo Wii Shortage this Christmas… again

Sep 13, 2008 at 1:00pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

During an interview with Game Daily Gamestop’s new CEO mentions that he thinks the Wii will be hard to find again this winter for the 3rd Christmas in a row. Poor Nintendo just can’t pump out enough of them for the world. I would suggest you pick yours up now, rather than later.

Satoru Iwata on Maintaining Nintendo’s Momentum

Aug 4, 2008 at 11:29am by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

Wall Street Journal has a great interview with Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.

WSJ: You finally unveiled Wii Music, the game that Super Mario Brothers creator Shigeru Miyamoto demonstrated three years ago.

Mr. Iwata: Wii Music completes what Miyamoto wrote in his proposal when he came up with the idea for the Wii. He was saying that he needs to think up more ideas now.

WSJ: Since you first launched Wii, you’ve introduced several accessories, such as the steering wheel to play racing games and the gun-like Wii Zapper to shoot targets in a game. This month you unveiled the Wii Motion Plus and Wii Speak. Are there any more accessories in the pipeline?

Mr. Iwata: Most of the ideas for accessories that we had initially come up with are out now. We might think up some more, and we might make them if we do, but we don’t have any plans to release a whole lot more.

WSJ: Will Wii owners be forced to buy a Wii Motion Plus for each controller they own to play newer games?

Mr. Iwata: There will be games that will be enhanced by the Wii Motion Plus as well as games that can only be played with it. Users will need four if they have four controllers, but we’re going to try to offer it for as little as possible. We haven’t announced the price yet, but the cost of making the Wii Motion Plus is not that much, so I think we can make it very affordable.

The Nintendo Wii is a Virus

Apr 21, 2008 at 12:21pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

At least, that’s what Epic Games’ president, Mike Caps thinks. During an interview with IGN Mike tells everyone how he really feels about the Wii and whether or not Epic Games will bring anything to the console.

Capps: Part of it’s being cheap. I think it’s a, I mean, so two things: first of all, great credit to them. The first time I played a videogame with my parents – aging myself a bit – was on Atari 2600. The next time I played a videogame with my parents, 25 years later or whatever, was Wii Tennis. So it’s about bringing people together, families, Thanksgiving, all that. I think it’s kind of like a weird virus because I have not yet found a reason to play with my Wii since then.

I can agree with the Wii bringing families together. A virus? no. So, will Epic bring a game to the Wii?

IGN: Is there any chance that Epic will ever, is there going to be a point where there are too many Wiis on the market for you guys to not make a game for it?

Capps: No, we go forward, not back. It makes more sense for us to invest in the next-generation tech. There have been shops that have done it. Red Steel was a launch title and that was on Unreal Engine. So it’s been done. How you take an engine that’s all based on shaders and materials and run it on hardware that doesn’t support shaders is just impossible. It’s about as easy as PSP for us. Maybe it would make sense, but it makes more sense to invest going forward.

I severely disagree with Capps and believe that he is making a huge mistake by not producing software for the console. There are millions of possibilities for games for the Nintendo Wii utilizing the Wiimote. The mouse and keyboard may have their days numbered already.

Getting Fit with Miyamoto and Iwata

Feb 11, 2008 at 10:35pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

Hello, everyone. My name is Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo Co., Ltd. As you may already know, some time ago I began conducting a series of interviews explaining the vision behind Wii. Now I’d like to continue that process to help explain the thinking and planning behind our new product, Wii Fit.
Over the course of the next few weeks we will hear from those who were actually involved in the development of this title. Given that I will be interviewing my own employees, I admit this is a somewhat interesting experiment, but by talking face-to-face with them, I hope to convey why we believe this is such an important product.
There are many insights that only these key developers will be able to recount. I hope you enjoy these interviews and please look forward to Wii Fit as it enters markets in the west later this year.

Sincerely,
Satoru Iwata

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Remake in 3D

Nov 13, 2007 at 9:24pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

Could it be? Will Nintendo actually remake The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past in full 3D glory? In an interview with the Official Nintendo Magazine Eiji Aonuma gives us a possible hint!

“Ocarina of Time was the first title I worked on, and I was continuously tackling challenges every day during its development, so I think this is the title I feel I impacted the most. I have to say though, the first Zelda game that I played and felt potential in was Link to the Past. I’m actually very interested in what it would be like if we remade that title as a 3D game.”

Cheers to that! This would be amazing Nintendo, please remake this game!

Will Wright Confirms Spore for the Wii

Oct 28, 2007 at 3:49pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

Spore Logo

According to and interview with Will over at Guardian Unlimited,

We’re doing Spore on the Wii, and we did MySims. It takes signifcant re-thinking to work out how you’re going to do it. PS3 and Xbox 360 are similar enough that you can basically use the same system for both. So it comes down to what the interesting major platforms are and which markets we want to hit.
