Hands on with the DSi Japanese Import

Nov 14, 2008 at 2:35pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

IGN goes hands on with the DSi and shows the differences between the Nintendo DS-i and the Nintendo DS in this 4 minute video. According to IGN importing a DSi is not a good idea unless you know Japanese and don’t mind not being able to download any games via the new online DS store available from within the console itself. If that’s not enough to stop you though feel free to import it. Be forewarned however that it will cost you a hefty $299.00.

Nintendo DSi to be Region Locked

Oct 12, 2008 at 7:00pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

It looks as though the days of region unlocked software are about to end for the DS. I’ll just let Nintendo do the explaining.

“Dsi embeds net communication functionality within itself and we are intending to provide net services specifically tailored for each region. Also because we are including parental control functionality for Nintendo Dsi and each region has its unique age limit made by different independent bodies”

Nintendo DSi US Release Date Well into 2009

Oct 3, 2008 at 12:20pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

Reggie Fils-Aime said it, “We will not see the product here in North America until well into calendar 2009″.

So there you have it, don’t expect the US version of the Nintendo DS-i until later next year. I guess we will have to import it in the meantime if we want to get it this December.

Club Nintendo Coming to the US, New Wii Channel and more!

Oct 2, 2008 at 3:50pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

Also announced today was the Wii Speak Channel, a number of games slated for 2009, including a new Punch-Out!! and Sin & Punishment 2 for Wii, and Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Mario & Luigi RPG 3 for Nintendo DS. Consumers also can expect a new “Personal Trainer” series of titles designed to help users enrich their lives and learn new skills in fun and interesting ways.

Nintendo also announced that North American supplies of the Wii video game console between October and December will see a significant increase from 2007’s levels, and that Nintendo DS will also be available in greater abundance than ever before. Could this mean that everyone will get a Nintendo Wii this Christmas?!

“We have new games and new experiences for every kind of player this holiday season, and that will certainly fuel increased interest in Wii and Nintendo DS,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “While there’s no way to gauge total demand for our hardware systems, we’re trying to satisfy as many of those players as possible.”

The new Wii Speak Channel arrives on Nov. 16 and uses the Wii Speak, a microphone that sits on top of your television. This accessory is sold separately at an MSRP of $29.99. People who buy the microphone are given a code that allows them to download the Wii Speak Channel from the Wii Shop Channel at no charge. The Wii Speak lets people in up to four locations who have traded Friend Codes chat with one another at no extra cost. When you use Wii Speak in real time, your Mii appears on your TV screen and mimics your chat. You also can leave audio messages for your friends and family members or use Wii Speak to narrate captions for your photos.

Gamers have longed for the expansion of Club Nintendo to North America for years, and now Nintendo is making it a reality for everyone. Club Nintendo rewards Nintendo loyalists who complete surveys and register Nintendo products with loyalty coins that can be redeemed for exclusive items available only to Club Nintendo members. Club Nintendo is set to debut in North America this holiday season.

Key software available for Wii this holiday season includes:

  • Wii Music: It’s a new Wii experience that launches on Oct. 20 and gives you the ability to play a wide variety of musical instruments by using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers to mimic the motions used to play real instruments. Everyone in the family will enjoy jamming together, while music fans will enjoy creating their own fresh, stylized takes on a variety of songs. Songs range from classical favorites like Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” to pop hits like “Material Girl” or “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” to Nintendo standards like the Super Mario Bros. theme.
  • Animal Crossing: City Folk: This game lets you live your life in a virtual community that’s all your own. You can interact with the fun characters in your town, customize everything from your house to your clothing and even chat with other friends in the game using the Wii Speak. Animal Crossing: City Folk launches on Nov. 16.
  • WiiWare delivers great new games directly to Wii consoles that are connected to the Internet.

Nintendo’s downloadable game service will see games like:

    • Tetris Party: This game will feature 18 game modes, including 10 never-before-seen single-player and multiplayer variations of Tetris. Some modes will use the unique capabilities of the Wii Remote and the Wii Balance Board.
    • Strong Bad Episode 3: This third episode in the series features humorous story-driven game play, music-themed collectibles and achievements and an old-school side scrolling shoot ‘em up mini-game, as well as a special celebrity guest appearance by rock gods Limozeen!
    • World of Goo: This title is an award-winning, physics-based puzzle/construction game. Grab living, squirming, talking globs of goo to build structures, bridges, cannonballs, zeppelins and giant tongues.
    • Cave Story: This title is an action-adventure game with new, exclusive content and features created only for the WiiWare version.
    • Boingz: Developed by the award-winning studio NinjaBee and published by RealNetworks, Inc., Boingz introduces players to bendy, stretchy little critters who’ve found themselves scattered about an alien world. Using the Wii Remote, players can grab, stretch and fling the rubber-band bodies of the Boingz to bounce them around the environments and help them find their way home.

Key games planned for Wii in 2009 include:

  • Punch-Out!!: Nintendo is reviving one of its most storied and popular franchises with the first new Punch-Out!! boxing game in 15 years. Players will once again follow the exploits of the up-and-coming challenger, Little Mac, and take on a series of opponents, including favorites from the past like Glass Joe and King Hippo.
  • Sin & Punishment 2: The announcement of a sequel to one of the most popular Japanese import titles ever is a dream come true for avid Nintendo fans. This new sequel blends intuitive Wii Remote pointing controls with the shooting and sword-swinging game play that made the original an instant classic and fan favorite.

Some Nintendo products available this fall for Nintendo DS include:

  • Personal Trainer: Cooking: This title launches on Nov. 24 as the first in Nintendo’s new Personal Trainer series. Personal Trainer: Cooking includes more than 200 recipes from around the world and transforms the Nintendo DS into an electronic, interactive cookbook, complete with a glossary of terms and even instructional videos. In 2009, the Personal Trainer series will expand with Personal Trainer: Math, a collection of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division drills based on the Kageyama method. Meanwhile, Personal Trainer: Walking will introduce a wireless pedometer, letting consumers not only track every step they take, but also turn walking into interactive entertainment.
  • Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia: On Nov. 10, this new installment in the Pokemon Ranger series allows you to use the power of Pokémon to protect nature and help people in need as you strive to become a Top Ranger. Use the DS stylus to encircle and capture Pokémon with the “Capture Styler” as you explore the vast new Almia region.

Key games planned for Nintendo DS in 2009 include:

  • Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon: A reinvention of the original NES titles with revamped graphics and intuitive touch control, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon will finally introduce longtime fans to the stories that gave birth to the series nearly 20 years ago in Japan, while introducing the Fire Emblem franchise to a broader audience of strategy and chess fans. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon also reveals the back story of Marth, the original lead character in the Fire Emblem series introduced and made popular in North America by the Super Smash Bros. series of fighting games.
  • Mario & Luigi RPG 3: The acclaimed Mario & Luigi series returns with another hilarious action role-playing game. Join the Mario Bros. as their travels take them far and wide.
  • Rhythm Heaven: If you can snap your fingers in time to music, you’re ready to play this simple but infectious rhythm game. Just tap your stylus on the touch screen to the beat of the music.
Nintendo has a strong lineup of legacy games and accessories that have continued selling well, even a year after they launched. These include Super Mario Galaxy, the Wii Zapper accessory, Wii Fit, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii. These five products are expected to remain in high demand as shoppers look for ways to make their holiday dollars go further.

Nintendo DS-i Battery Life

Oct 2, 2008 at 9:55am by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

Yikes, Nintendo forgot to mention this tidbit about the new Nintendo DS i. The new Nintendo DS is going to be 4mm wider, 1mm longer, 2.6mm thinner, and 4 grams lighter than the Nintendo DS Lite. It will also consume significantly more power than the “old” model.

According to official specifications released by Nintendo, the DS Lite is capable of 15-19 hours of play at a minimum level of LCD brightness, and 5-8 at full brightness. The DSi, meanwhile, will only manage a weak 9-14 hours of play at minimum brightness, or 3-4 at max brightness.

You will be able to Pre-order the Nintendo DS-i in White or Black soon here in the US.

Official Nintendo DSi Announcement!

Oct 1, 2008 at 11:13pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

Nintendo has finally announced the new Nintendo DS console, which is officially named Nintendo DS i. The new console will feature the following:

  • 0.3 (~640×480 pixels, which is more than enough for the Nintendo DS 256 x 192 resolution screens) megapixel camera
  • SD card slot for digital downloads and mp3 playback. (Movies too?)
  • 12% thinner than the Nintendo DS Lite
  • Built-in web browser with access to the DSWare online store where you can spend Nintendo Points on software and games. Nintendo will give gamers 1000 points for free if they visit the store by March 2010. The games section will feature four price structures: Free, 200 Points, 500 Points and Premium at 800 Points.
  • The Nintendo DS-i will not be compatible with Game Boy Advance games.
  • The new console will cost roughly 18,000 yen ($180.00) when it is released in Japan on November 1.

Sadly as of today the console is a Japan exclusive. I hope this won’t be the case in the near future! Don’t let that stop you though! You will be able to Pre-order the Nintendo DS-i in White or Black soon here in the US anyway!

Prime Metroid Prime Team Members Found Armature Studios

Sep 16, 2008 at 2:20pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

Gamasutra has word that three of the top developers on the Metroid Prime development team announced today that they are breaking away to form their own game development firm, Armature Studios.

According to a statement from the developer, “The goal of Armature is to create compelling new intellectual properties with a unique development framework that leverages a small core creative team and partners them with strategic external developers.”

The business model is designed to “…enhance the creative flexibility of a small independent studio while offering modular scale through external partnerships.” The company has signed a long-term exclusive publishing deal with Electronic Arts.

“We are very excited about trying to rethink how games are developed for this generation of consoles, and our partners at EA have been nothing but supportive in this pursuit,” said Pacini. “What really gets me going is that now, no platform is off limits. That is just something we didn’t have the ability to do before.”

“I can’t begin to describe how thrilled I am to be working with the talented team that created such an amazingly well-crafted series of games,” said Louis Castle of EA’s Blueprint studio and acting executive producer of the Armature Studio games.

New Nintendo DS Portable Handheld Confirmed?

Sep 6, 2008 at 9:59pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

UPDATE! Official Nintendo DS-i Announcement

IGN has made claim that they have investigated the rumors of the new Nintendo DS console and that a refresh of the Nintendo DS hardware is in development! The new Nintendo DS unfortunately will not be in your hands this Christmas however. The current launch window for the new hardware is April or May of next year.

The new DS will feature dual screens just as its predecessor, however they will now be in wide format. Also, instead of just one touchscreen both screens will be touchable. Perhaps this will mean that old DS titles will be enhanced to wide format, or just scaled down to fit within the wide screens. Most likely the upper touch screen will be disabled with the use of old DS titles, unless they have secretly been developed to include this ability.

If any official announcement is to be made it will most likely happen at the Tokyo Gameshow in Japan this year on October 9th through the 12th. We should find out if this is going to be Nintendo DS 2, or just a hardware upgrade at that time. IGN’s article can be found here.

New Nintendo Portable Handheld Console Coming in 2008?

Aug 2, 2008 at 10:23am by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

UPDATE! Official Nintendo DS-i Announcement

[Editors Update 9/6: New Rumors About the New Nintendo DS!]

Analyst Michael Pachter had this to say about the possible early launch this year of Nintendo’s top secret new portable console system.

“We think that the timing of a new product introduction will depend upon the sales profile for the DS, and believe that lower than expected DS hardware sales could trigger an earlier launch for the new device.”

“DS sales are solid worldwide, but are weak in Japan, leading us to expect an introduction of a new device in Japan before the end of the calendar year.”

“We think that Nintendo has a new handheld device ready for launch in [Japan] before the end of the calendar year.”

Poll: What game do you want us to review next?

Jun 3, 2008 at 1:54pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

Please excuse the extended lack of news. Being the lone author here, I have been helping my family build an Alpaca ranch her in Southern California and have not had the time to update the website lately. Recently one of our members suggested that we post another review of a game on the site - hah imagine that, a review site reviewing games? Hence our latest poll asks what game you want us to review next? I currently do not own a Wii Fit and I am out of cash, so please don’t vote for that one ;). Vote on the sidebar

Geometry Wars: Galaxies for Wii

Apr 11, 2008 at 8:25pm by Laura

Geometry Wars: GalaxiesGeometry Wars: Galaxies is a multidirectional shooter video game created by Bizarre Creations. It was released for Nintendo’s Wii and DS in November 2007. This game is a sequel to Geometry Wars. On the Wii, the player moves the ship with the Nunchuk controller’s joystick, while pointing the Wii Remote at the screen to aim. The player can also use the Classic Controller, moving with the left stick and firing with the right stick. There are also different mutiplayer options including co-op, simultaneous and versus mode. Those that own both the Nintendo DS and Wii can link the game using Wi-Fi to unlock bonus content, and players will be able post high scores on the Wii’s online leader board. This seems like a fun and interactive game for people with all skill levels.

Government Sponsored Byron Review Coming Soon

Mar 20, 2008 at 9:33am by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

On March 27th the highly anticipated Byron Review will be published. It is a study by the government of the United States on the effects of violent imagery and content in interactive media on children. Dr. Tanya Byron will be presenting the study to the media next Thursday.

The general consensus among the game industry is that it will legitimize the industry to government and traditional media who tend to blame video games for societies problems.

We’ll see I suppose! This might have a large effect on the industry when it is released!
