So there are some rumors roaming around the net claiming that Nintendo may be planning on using Nvidia’s Tegra chip in the next generation DS handheld. It is said that it will use the 40nm second generation Tegra chip; which offer higher performance while using less power than the current 65 nm-chip. Higher resolution screens, full backwards compatibility, and PC perspective are claimed. This device is rumored to be released in late of 2010; which could mean high resolution graphics with antialiasing and finally some high quality smooth texture filtering!

Crab Helmet over at Zelda Universe has written a fantastic article which goes over recent speculations over the new Zelda game’s number and types of items and weapons. Often speculators express a want for a large number of new items in the new Zelda. Crab however makes an excellent point that the more recent Zelda games have been over saturated with too many items which are only used once or twice throughout the game. Crab recalls the first and second Zelda games which only had very few items and weapons. In these games the player was able to use these items extensively throughout the game in order to discover new secrets. I have to agree with Crab in that I do not believe that the next Zelda game needs a gigantic selection of weapons and items. Why don’t you read Crab Helmet’s opinion and let us know here what you think the number of items in the next Zelda should be!

UPDATE 2/18: Nintendo Announces DSi Release Date!

Nintendo DSi is now rumored to launch in April this year for $179.99. According to IGN’s sources close to Nintendo the exact release date for the US DS-i is April 4, 2009. The price is the same as the Japanese version and $50 more than the currently available Nintendo DS Lite.
Nintendo is considering the Nintendo DS-i an alternative to the Nintendo DS Lite and will not be replacing the DS Lite with the DSi for the time being at least.
As you no doubt already know, the Nintendo DS-i was announced in October, 2008 and features two 640×480 cameras, larger screens (same resolution) built in SD card support for music playback and other purposes, and lacks a Game Boy Advance cartridge slot.
UPDATE! Official Nintendo DS-i Announcement
IGN has made claim that they have investigated the rumors of the new Nintendo DS console and that a refresh of the Nintendo DS hardware is in development! The new Nintendo DS unfortunately will not be in your hands this Christmas however. The current launch window for the new hardware is April or May of next year.
The new DS will feature dual screens just as its predecessor, however they will now be in wide format. Also, instead of just one touchscreen both screens will be touchable. Perhaps this will mean that old DS titles will be enhanced to wide format, or just scaled down to fit within the wide screens. Most likely the upper touch screen will be disabled with the use of old DS titles, unless they have secretly been developed to include this ability.
If any official announcement is to be made it will most likely happen at the Tokyo Gameshow in Japan this year on October 9th through the 12th. We should find out if this is going to be Nintendo DS 2, or just a hardware upgrade at that time. IGN’s article can be found here.

Analyst Michael Pachter had this to say about the possible early launch this year of Nintendo’s top secret new portable console system.
“We think that the timing of a new product introduction will depend upon the sales profile for the DS, and believe that lower than expected DS hardware sales could trigger an earlier launch for the new device.”
“DS sales are solid worldwide, but are weak in Japan, leading us to expect an introduction of a new device in Japan before the end of the calendar year.”
“We think that Nintendo has a new handheld device ready for launch in [Japan] before the end of the calendar year.”
