New Nintendo DS Portable Handheld Confirmed?

Sep 6, 2008 at 9:59pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

UPDATE! Official Nintendo DS-i Announcement

IGN has made claim that they have investigated the rumors of the new Nintendo DS console and that a refresh of the Nintendo DS hardware is in development! The new Nintendo DS unfortunately will not be in your hands this Christmas however. The current launch window for the new hardware is April or May of next year.

The new DS will feature dual screens just as its predecessor, however they will now be in wide format. Also, instead of just one touchscreen both screens will be touchable. Perhaps this will mean that old DS titles will be enhanced to wide format, or just scaled down to fit within the wide screens. Most likely the upper touch screen will be disabled with the use of old DS titles, unless they have secretly been developed to include this ability.

If any official announcement is to be made it will most likely happen at the Tokyo Gameshow in Japan this year on October 9th through the 12th. We should find out if this is going to be Nintendo DS 2, or just a hardware upgrade at that time. IGN’s article can be found here.

Aug 2, 2008 at 10:23am by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

UPDATE! Official Nintendo DS-i Announcement

[Editors Update 9/6: New Rumors About the New Nintendo DS!]

Analyst Michael Pachter had this to say about the possible early launch this year of Nintendo’s top secret new portable console system.

“We think that the timing of a new product introduction will depend upon the sales profile for the DS, and believe that lower than expected DS hardware sales could trigger an earlier launch for the new device.”

“DS sales are solid worldwide, but are weak in Japan, leading us to expect an introduction of a new device in Japan before the end of the calendar year.”

“We think that Nintendo has a new handheld device ready for launch in [Japan] before the end of the calendar year.”

Apr 7, 2008 at 9:41pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

Kotaku has word from MTV that Rare and Microsoft have been working together since summer 2007 on a Wii remote and Mii copycat accessory and software. Along with the news was a crappy sketch of the device made in Paint. They are also beckoning developers to port their Nintendo Wii games to the XBox 360 touting how easy it will be to program them for the XBox 360

Perhaps Rare will use the new device in Banjo Kazooie 3?

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Lucas

The folks over at Go Nintendo have been tipped off in recent times to a possible delay for SSBB. Apparently some people who have pre-ordered the game have been getting notices that the game will not be shipping until 3/9/2008.

Nintendo has yet to speak on the issue. Go Nintendo is expecting that the delay is in fact going to occur.

Nintendo Wii (un)Officially Hacked

Dec 28, 2007 at 9:23pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

During the 24th annual Chaos Communication Congress a fully hacked Nintendo Wii was demoed. The unit opens up the possibility of running home made games with full hardware capabilities on the console. If I recall correctly Nintendo is planning on releasing a SDK for the Nintendo Wii in the near future for people to make their own custom games and make them available on the WiiWare Channel. Here is a snip from the report.

The guys over at 24C3 just demoed a Wii hack that is set to provide native wii homebrew in the near future (not running in GC mode, and with full access to all the Wii hardware!)

They were able to find encryption and decryption keys by doing full memory dumps at runtime over a custom serial interface.

Using these keys, they were able to create a Wii ‘game’ that ran their own code (their demo happened to show live sensor/Wiimote information, amongst a few other things).

There was a video of the announcement on youtube but Google appears to have removed it.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Remake in 3D

Nov 13, 2007 at 9:24pm by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

Could it be? Will Nintendo actually remake The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past in full 3D glory? In an interview with the Official Nintendo Magazine Eiji Aonuma gives us a possible hint!

“Ocarina of Time was the first title I worked on, and I was continuously tackling challenges every day during its development, so I think this is the title I feel I impacted the most. I have to say though, the first Zelda game that I played and felt potential in was Link to the Past. I’m actually very interested in what it would be like if we remade that title as a 3D game.”

Cheers to that! This would be amazing Nintendo, please remake this game!

USB Keyboard Functionality Added to Nintendo Wii

Aug 9, 2007 at 10:00am by Joel "Radium" Lisenby

The update I talked about in the last article apparently had some surprises attached! You can now write memos with a USB keyboard. Unfortunately the functionality has not been added to the Opera browser, however I would expect that Nintendo is planning on adding the ability to do this soon. Have fun writing your memos with a keyboard! ;)

According to several sources the latest rumor has it that Nintendo is currently working on a Nintendo Gamecube portable system as we speak! I don’t know about you all but that sounds awesome to me!
